Join Our Maintainer Burnout Session on June 17

As part of GitHub’s Maintainer Month (June), CHAOSS is hosting a one-hour interactive workshop on Maintainer Burnout. This will be on June 17, 2022 at 12pm US Central/Chicago time.

CHAOSS is hosting an interactive working group session to understand how maintainers manage burnout and talk about how to facilitate conversations about burnout and mental health in their open source communities. We will also discuss the Project Burnout metric from our DEI working group.

Say Hello to the CHAOSS Welcome Slack Bot – A She Code Africa Project

Thanks to the amazing efforts of Precious Abubakar and Iyimide Adegunloye from the She Code Africa mentorship program, we have a new friend in the #newcomers Slack channel! This new friend is a welcome bot that will respond privately to anyone who types the word “newbie” in the channel. From there they can get answers to some of our common questions about getting started in the CHAOSS community. (Go ahead and try it out!)

What’s also great about this bot is that we can take this foundation and add information to it as the CHAOSS community grows and evolves. We are incredibly grateful to Precious and Mide and the wonderful work they’ve done to improve the onboarding experience for newcomers to the community. Congratulations on completing a very successful mentorship program! (And a big thank you to their mentors Ruth Ikegah, Matt Cantu Snell, and Elizabeth Barron).

Congratulations GSoC, GSoD and Outreachy Students!

Please help us welcome the mentees of the Google Summer of Code, Google Season of Docs, and Outreachy 2022 sessions who will be working with CHAOSS for the next few months! We received many excellent applications and because we received a limited number of slots from Google and Outreachy, we had to make some very difficult decisions. We greatly appreciate all who took the time to submit a proposal and we would love it if you decided to stay connected to CHAOSS as part of our community! ❤️

We welcome the following students:

We look forward to working with you all and seeing what we can accomplish together. Congratulations!

New CHAOSScast Released: Episode 57 – The Ins and Outs of Large Scale Research with Hilary Carter

This week we were so honored to be joined by Hilary Carter, the VP Research for the Linux Foundation! Hilary chats with host Georg Link, and panelists Kate Stewart and Sophia Vargas about the way that the LF approaches the large scale research projects that many others rely on in their work. They talk about the planning process, creating surveys and collecting trace data, and how we can all collaborate and share insights with each other. This is an episode you won’t want to miss, and you can listen here: https://podcast.chaoss.community/57.

New Issue Templates in the Working Groups’ Repos

Shout out to Matt Germonprez who set up all the working group repositories with three issue templates:

These templates include guidance for form and structure and when applicable, checklists for metrics quality assurances. Standardizing them across working groups is a great step toward making it easier for contributors to open issues, ensuring we are collecting all the necessary information, and completing all the steps for releasing our metrics.

Welcome, She Code Africa Mentees!

Please join me in welcoming Precious Abubakar and Iyimide Adegunloye to CHAOSS! They are our newest mentees under a mentorship program called She Code Africa. This is the first year we have been a part of this program.

Some introductions from them:

From Precious: I’m Precious from Nigeria (or “PDA” – my initials, either is fine). I’m a software developer (my top skills are HTML, CSS, JavaScript/ReactJs), and I’m also a writer (I blog about my transition from healthcare to tech, but I’m working on doing more technical writing).

From Idiyime: I am a Front-End developer who specializes in creating exceptional and dynamic user experiences, responsive web pages and web applications.  I work with JavaScript and React JS, Bootstrap, HTML and CSS.

Precious and Iyimide will be working on a Slack bot to help newcomers find their way in the CHAOSS ecosystem, and improve our onboarding process. We are super excited to have them here!

New CHAOSScast Released: Episode 56 – Using GrimoireLab to Understand the Health of Your Open Source Project

On this week’s episode of CHAOSScast, we are joined by CHAOSS community member Chenqi Shan from Huawei. Chenqi chatted with Daniel Izquierdo, Sean Goggins, and Venia Logan to discuss her work with building metrics models for the open source community openEuler. They talk about which metrics might be more useful for open source projects at varying stages of the project’s lifecycle, using OpenSearch, and the different components of GrimoireLab. We are thrilled to have Chenqi in the CHAOSS community and you can listen to this episode here: https://podcast.chaoss.community/56.

During this process, there will be no PRs merged in for new metrics or revisions to the current set of metrics. Working Groups are asked to make sure all metrics are in the state they should be, and that they are all added to the translations repository. Thanks for your help!

CHAOSS Migrating From Mailing Lists Toward Forums

After much discussion, we have decided to move away from the traditional mailing list mode of communication and move toward a forum, to better facilitate open discussion and make it easier for newcomers to join conversations in progress. There is a committee of 10 who are working on this issue, with representation from a variety of the different parts of CHAOSS. We have an open ad-hoc Slack channel set up (#forum-migration-planning) so if you have experience migrating from mailing lists to Discourse, and you have feedback or advice we would love you to join us. We are just starting this journey! (And just for clarification, we will continue to use Slack for more immediate conversations and chat.)

Working Group Spotlight: DEI Working Group

This week in the Community Call, we heard updates from the DEI Working Group. This group looks at metrics that have relevance to diversity, equity, and inclusion within open source. A sub-group is focused on our DEI Event Badging Initiative.

This group included 2 new metrics candidates in the latest release:

  1. Project Demographics: https://github.com/chaoss/wg-dei/issues/402
  2. Event Accessibility: https://github.com/chaoss/wg-dei/issues/401 (will also be added to the DEI Event Badging Initiative)

This group also has been experimenting with the GitHub Project Board as a way to organize and categorize incoming issues and to-dos. As well, there is work going on in this group around creating a more comprehensive approach to the various mentorship programs we participate in.

DEI Working Group meets every Wednesday at 10:00 am US Central/Chicago time and the next meeting is Wednesday, April 6. Hope to see you there!

Data Use Awareness Recommendations Finalized

After many hours of work and much discussion, we are happy to have finalized our Data Use Awareness Recommendations. This document serves as guidance for those who are implementing our metrics and aims to educate them on the privacy and ethical considerations they should be mindful of when using data about their community members. The plan is to link to this document in every metric so that it is readily available. Big shoutout to Sophia Vargas, Lucas Gonze and Matt Germonprez who were the main drivers for getting this document finalized!

New CHAOSScast Released: Episode 55 – “Risky” Business with Dhruv Sachdev

Huge thank you to Dhruv Sachdev, a former GSOC student and CHAOSS Contributor who was kind enough to appear on our podcast for Episode 55. Dhruv was joined by host Sean Goggins and panelist Sophia Vargas to talk about his work with CHAOSS as a GSOC 21 student, his path to open source, and the evolution of the project he worked on. We appreciate you, Dhruv! The podcast can be found here: https://podcast.chaoss.community/55 or on your favorite podcast platform.

Working Group Spotlight: Metrics Models Working Group

Last week in the Community Call, we heard updates from the Metrics Models Working Group. This group looks at bringing together groups of metrics from different working groups to build more context around questions to be answered.

This group has been working on creating a new Metrics Models template that can be used to create new models. They have also been working on ways to integrate the models with the CHAOSS website, visualizing and simplifying them for consumption, and integrating with CHAOSS software like GrimoireLab and Augur. They also provided us with an example metric: Responsiveness Metrics Model.

The Metrics Models working group meets every other Tuesday/Wednesday at 6:00 pm US Central(Chicago) time/7:00 am Beijing time. Hope to see you there!

Reminder: Metrics Review Period is Open

Now is the time for you to offer last-minute feedback on our metrics candidates prior to their release in April. You don’t have to have worked on metrics, or participated in the CHAOSS Community before; we value feedback from everyone. This release will include 8 new metrics and 1 metric that will be moving to a metrics model.

Thanks for helping make our metrics the best they can be!
