2021-10 Metrics Release Announcement

We are very excited to announce the latest release of our open source community health metrics! This release is a special one for us because it marks the first time the metrics were released as part of our Metrics Automated Release System (or, affectionately known as MARS).

This release includes 16 new or revised metrics and 6 new or revised focus areas across our Working Groups and brings our total number of developed metrics to 70.

We’d like to acknowledge the hard work of everyone in our Working Groups, and extend a special thank you to our Metrics Release Team:

  • Ritik Malik
  • Yash Prakash
  • Georg Link
  • Kevin Lumbard

For full documentation of all our developed metrics, please reference this PDF of our 2010-10 Metrics Release. (This version is in English, and a Chinese translation will be released shortly).

Check Out the Latest CHAOSScast Episodes

Life has been moving fast here at CHAOSS, and we wanted to highlight some of the recent episodes of CHAOSScast, in case you missed them!

Episode 42: Hidden Infrastructure: The Foundations of Open Source with Josh Simmons. In this episode, Georg Link, Brian Proffitt, and Daniel Izquierdo spoke with Josh Simmons (Tidelift) about open source sustainability in projects and foundations, and how this can impact community health.

Episode 43: Growing the CHAOSS Community Globally – CHAOSS 社区的全球化故事 – with Xiaoya, Willem, King, and Clement. Our Chinese community is growing in leaps and bounds, and in this episode, Georg Link talks with Xiaoya Xia, Willem Jiang, Gaokun (King), and Clement Li about the impact of measuring community health in a global context. They also chat about the work that is being done in the Asia-Pacific Region in advancing the understanding of open source community health.

Episode 44: GSOC: MARS Project (Metrics Automated Release System) with Ritik Malik and Yash Prakash. The MARS project was implemented under the Google Summer of Code session this summer. In this episode, Georg Link, Matt Germonprez, Kevin Lumbard, Ritik Malik, and Yash Prakash chat about the development and implementation of the system and their experience in participating in GSoC with CHAOSS.

Episode 45: Fireside Chat: Metrics Strategy with Daniel, Sean, and Venia. There’s no denying that there can be pitfalls, challenges, and caveats when dealing with open source community metrics. In this episode, Daniel Izquierdo, Sean Goggins, and Venia Logan talk about the relevance of metrics, frameworks for implementation, challenges with data, and much more.

Of course, you can subscribe to CHAOSScast on any of your favorite platforms, or listen to any individual episode on the CHAOSScast Site.

Meeting Cancellations – Please Note

It’s conference season again, which means that some of the meetings this week will be canceled due to community members traveling.

  • App Ecosystem meeting today was canceled and will be meeting next on November 1.
  • DEI Badging Outreach (10/19) and Weekly Meeting (10/20) are both canceled this week. They will both resume a regular schedule next week.

Announcing All In: Open Sourcing Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

CHAOSS is very proud to be partnering with GitHub, The Linux Foundation, Red Hat, several Universities, and many others, as a founding partner in the All In project. All In is an open source community that is dedicated to advancing DEI in an “open source” way: collaboratively, transparently, and iteratively. By bringing together corporations, universities, and organizations like CHAOSS, we aim to create more inclusive and welcoming open source projects. This is an exciting partnership for CHAOSS, and you can read more about it through the website, or their GitHub repo.

Metrics Freeze and Upcoming 2021-10 Release

The Metrics Release Team is working hard to finalize this latest round of metrics and Working Group changes. This release is one of our most productive iterations, and also will be our first fully automated release (via MARS!). We are on schedule to release the English version of our metrics next week, and the Chinese version the week after. If you have any questions about the release, you can reach out to the Metrics Release Team on our Slack channel, or send a note to our Mailing List.

Congratulations to Veerasamy Sevagen!

We wanted to extend a heartfelt congratulations to Sevagen for being our first student to participate in and successfully complete a project through the Summer 2021 OSPP! Sevagen worked on documentation for the GrimoireLab tutorial, and you can read his final report and blog post here. Fantastic job, Sevagen!

CHAOSS in the News

Our friends at the Rochester Institute of Technology have been using GrimoireLab (a CHAOSS software project from Bitergia) to create a portal that will help their OSPO easily display metrics for all their open source software.

Their project is called Mystic, and it’s designed to support the growing number of open source projects run by RIT staff, faculty, and students pursuing a minor in Free and Open Source Software and Free Culture. This field of study is new to academia, and so the RIT OSPO was really starting from square one.

You can read more about their journey with CHAOSS/GrimoireLab and Mystic at Opensource.com: Building an open source community health analytics platformor hear more about Mystic at CHAOSScon.

Join the GrimoireLab Hackathon and Bring Your Ideas to Life!

It’s no secret that the GrimoireLab toolset can be extremely helpful for researchers and data scientists. As such, as part of the 2022 Mining Software Repositories Conference (MSR 2022), the GrimoireLab team will be hosting the (virtual) Hackathon Track.

From the MSR 2022 site:

The GrimoireLab MSR Virtual Hackathon will provide activities typical of the in-person hackathon virtually. For example, defining research questions, forming teams, and scoping problems. Organizers will provide advice on the best ways to conduct data processing and improve performance. The hackathon will also provide the opportunity for participants to work with world-class researchers on relevant problems and research questions.

Please join if you are concerned about better understanding software development and building tools to help researchers and stakeholders better understand how specific software projects perform. Also, if you are interested in adding another tool to your toolbox, the hackathon may help you in your future research. In this hackathon, we will focus on the analysis of free, open source software (FOSS) projects providing free access to their development data, but results will be of potential interest to the industry at large, and of course, to the research community.

The Hackathon and Conference are happening May 23-24, 2022, but you need to show your intent to participate, and submit any project ideas by October 18, 2021. Details on how to participate can be found in the MSR 2022 Hackathon GitHub repository.

You Have 2 More Weeks to Help Review Metrics

As you probably already know, the full month of September is dedicated to our public comment period and review of the proposed metrics for our 2021-10 release. That means you have a little over 2 weeks left to add your input.

Our community is encouraged to review and add comments to these metrics candidates during this 30-day review period. PLEASE feel free to add your input, +1’s, or any other comments to any or all of these 16 metrics:

No Meetings Today

Due to the US Holiday, there will be no meetings today. All meetings will go back to normal tomorrow. 🙂 See you then!

Evolution Working Group Change to Tuesdays

Starting tomorrow (September 7), the Evolution Working Group will be meeting bi-weekly on Tuesdays at 10:00 am US Central/Chicago time. There are already some interesting metrics being worked on for the next 2022 release, in almost every focus area of the group: code development efficiency, code development activity, code development process quality, and community growth. We encourage you to join this meeting if these topics sound interesting to you!

DEI Badging Initiative Updates

The DEI Badging Initiative hosts 2 meetings a week that you are welcome to join if you would like to help drive this project. These are 30-minute meetings and use a different Zoom link than our usual link:

  • DEI Badging Outreach – Every Tuesday at 10:00 am US Central (Chicago) time. This meeting is about strategies to promote the DEI Badging Initiative to those who may be interested in applying for a badge. (Zoom link is here)
  • DEI Badging Weekly – Every Wednesday at 8:30 am US Central (Chicago) time. This meeting is to discuss general topics around the program. (Zoom link is here)

The DEI Badging Initiative is also looking for more reviewers of potential applicants! If you would like to help make events more inclusive and welcoming, this is your chance. Our DEI Badging Initiative has a very real and tangible impact on the way open source events are organized. If you’d like to be a volunteer for this, please reach out to Matt Cantu, join one of the DEI Badging meetings, or join us in Slack.

Public Comment Period on our Metrics is Open!

From September 1-30, 2021, the public comment and review period is open for all the metrics currently under review. Metrics Freeze September 1, 2021, When Public Review Opens

We’ve been leading up to this for a while, but the current metrics candidates will be set for public review on September 1, 2021. This means that metrics won’t be changing and no new metrics will be added for the full month of September, for our 2021-10 release.

Our community is encouraged to review and add comments to these metrics candidates during this 30-day review period. PLEASE feel free to add your input, +1’s, or any other comments to any or all of these 16 metrics:

Thank you so much for your help in making our metrics the best they can be.

No App Ecosystem Working Group Meeting Monday

Because of the US Labor Day Holiday on September 6, there will be no App Ecosystem Working Group meeting (or any other CHAOSS meetings, for that matter). Enjoy a meeting-free day!

Governance Repo Renamed to Community

Today in the Weekly Community Call, we decided to rename the governance repo to community so it can act more as a central place for asynchronous community discussions through issues. It will also help us keep track of action items that arise from the community call, make those community discussions more transparent, and give everyone in the community a place to submit an idea, question, or comment.

If something’s been on your mind, or you’d like to open an issue, we encourage you to do so! https://github.com/chaoss/community.

Metrics Quality Improvements

Over the past few months, a team has been collaborating to develop the Metrics Checklist, which all our new metrics now abide by. This ensures that each metric goes through a process prior to being released, and it helps us keep things organized and on track. It includes steps and checks for process, content quality, and technical requirements, and you can see the checklist here.

We have always upheld the highest quality standards for our metrics, but we also now include measures like translations (Chinese and Spanish), the inclusion of DEI considerations in every metric, and an opt-in list of contributors who helped developed the metric.

Having this checklist makes sure that we don’t leave anything out, so a big shout-out to the team that worked on this: Kevin Lumbard, Georg Link, Vinod Ahuja, Ritik Malik, and Yash Prakash (and others who offered their input).

CHAOSScon Updates!

The CHAOSScon Committee has a few updates for everyone:

  • accepted speakers have been notified and we will be publishing the schedule very soon.
  • the CHAOSS swag has (almost all) arrived in Matt Germonprez’s living room, and it’s awesome.
  • reminder that we will be live-streaming the event, for free, for those who are unable to attend in person.
  • reminder that COVID vaccinations and masks will be required for those attending in person.

Registration is still available for the event, and we can’t wait to see you!

Metrics Models Working Group Will Continue

After a very successful first meeting last week, it was decided to continue the Metrics Models Working Group meetings on a weekly basis (at least to start with). You can read the notes from the first meeting here.

This group will continue to meet Tuesdays at 6:00 pm US Central/Chicago time (Wednesdays at 7:00 am, Beijing Standard Time). (We realize this time is inconvenient for our European Community, so we encourage you to bring your thoughts to the next App Ecosystem Group meeting on August 23 at 12:00 pm US Central/Chicago time.)

Both calls happen at our Community Zoom channel: https://zoom.us/my/chaoss. Please join us!

Reminder: Next Metrics Release Dates

The upcoming metrics freeze is upon us! The October release schedule is as follows:

  • September 1, 2021: Metrics development freeze.
  • September 1 – September 30: Public feedback period on proposed metrics.
  • October 1, 2021 (Approx): 2021-10 Metrics release.

All working groups should strive to bring closure to metrics currently in progress by September 1 if possible.

New Working Group: Metrics Models

The idea of “metrics models,” or various ways to bring related atomic individual metrics together for different purposes, is an idea that has been floated around and discussed multiple times across multiple working groups and meetings. This will be especially important to the consumers of our metrics as our list of developed metrics continues to grow! Our App Ecosystem Working Group also discusses these ideas, and the CHAOSS community is finally ready to pursue this as its own working group. You are encouraged to participate!

The first meeting of our new Metrics Model Working Group will be Tuesday, August 17 at 6:00 pm US Central/Chicago time.

Office Hours Moving to Bi-Weekly Schedule

We decided at the Community Meeting to change the Zoom Office Hours for newcomers to a bi-weekly schedule. The next Office Hours will be August 23, 2021, from 9:00 am – 11:00 am US Central/Chicago time.

Reminder, if you are a part of the CHAOSS community already, and would like to sign up to host one of these sessions, you can do so here!

CHAOSScast Episode 41: Forecasting Sustainability with Vladimir Filkov and Likang Yin

In this latest episode of CHAOSScast, we were so fortunate to host Vladimir Filkov and Likang Yin of the University of California-Davis and chat about their research in open source communities and attempting to forecast their sustainability. Vladimir and Likang were joined by host Georg Link, and panelists Sean Goggins and Sophia Vargas, and they discussed not only the research itself, but the motivations behind the project, the challenges they overcame, socio-technical systems, and predictability models. One of our more fascinating episodes you’re sure to enjoy. If you aren’t already subscribed, you can download and listen here: https://podcast.chaoss.community/41.

Community Handbook Featured at GitLab’s Commit Conference

Huge thank you to Jaskirat Singh and Nuritizi Sanchez for representing our amazing Community Handbook at GitLab’s Commit Conference this year. Although it has been a community effort, the handbook came together largely because of Jaskirat’s efforts as one of our GSoC students last year. We are proud that it can now be used as an example for other open source projects to draw upon for inspiration! The title of their talk was “Community Handbook Best Practices for Diversity and Inclusion,” and you can see it in its entirety on YouTube.

Only a Few Days Left to Submit to CHAOSScon!

The CHAOSScon CfP will be open until August 13, so you have just a few more days to submit a talk! Some suggested topics are:

Software related metrics topics:

  • tutorials
  • walk throughs
  • demos
  • how-to’s
  • new features

Metrics related topics:

  • metrics strategy
  • deep dive into the use of metrics
  • failure of metrics in practice
  • lessons learned, use cases, and case studies
  • proposals for new metrics
  • new visualizations

Do you have something to share in one of these areas? We highly encourage you to send in an abstract.

You can also now register for Open Source Summit, and the CHAOSScon add-on. CHAOSScon is happening in-person (and virtually) September 30 in Seattle, immediately following the OSS conference.

Sponsorship opportunities are also available! We’d be incredibly grateful for your company’s support, and your sponsorship will help us improve our DEI efforts for the conference.
