Weekly Newsletter (November 28 - December 2, 2022)

Reminder: Holiday Schedule for CHAOSS Meetings

This year we are following our tradition of taking a little break from official CHAOSS meetings at the end of the year. Please note the following meeting cancellations, with particular attention to the App Ecosystem meetings:

  • December 12- January 9 – no meetings
  • App Ecosystem Group – December 1-January 9 no meetings

CHAOSS work can still occur asynchronously if an individual Working Group wishes, and a lot of us will be around in Slack periodically if anything urgent comes up. But the hope is that we all take this time to rest and protect ourselves from burnout, so that we can come back refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to start anew in 2023!

CHAOSScon EU 2023 is Happening!

We are super excited to announce that CHAOSScon EU 2023 is happening in conjunction with FOSDEM in Brussels, Belgium.  CHAOSScon day will happen on February 3 from 8:00 to 17:00 Central European Standard Time. Although we are still finalizing some details, registration is open and you can learn more about this conference on the CHAOSScon EU 2023 website.

Hope you can join us!

Next Onboarding Session for New Chaotics

The CHAOSS community continues to grow! To make the onboarding process a little easier, Elizabeth Barron (CHAOSS Community Manager) and Ruth Ikegah (CHAOSS Africa Community Lead) will be hosting the next Onboarding Session on January 11, 2023 at 11:00 am US Central/Chicago time. We know this time is not convenient for everyone, but this is just a start and we will add and iterate as we go.

This meeting will cover:

  • General overview of CHAOSS
  • How you can begin contributing
  • How to get started with using the metrics
  • Q&A

We hope you can join to meet other newcomers and learn about CHAOSS! You can convert to your time zone here.

Recent CHAOSS Articles of Interest

Our CHAOSS community is often posting interesting blogs and articles, so we wanted to take a minute to highlight some of the recent ones that have been published. Thanks for helping spread the word about the importance of and considerations around open source health metrics!

If you read any interesting articles related to open source community health metrics, let us know and we’ll add them to the newsletter for our readers.

Major Augur Release!

Huge congratulations to the whole Augur team for their latest (and arguably largest to-date) release! From Sean Goggins’s announcement in Slack, here is what you can expect to find in this latest release:

Augur is releasing a significant update following an extensive beta testing regimen today. Thank you to the 239 contributors to this release, especially the @welcome-to-CHAOSS app, the CHAOSS Community, #chaoss-africa, and Augur’s core maintainer team. This is Augur’s 133rd formal release and by a wide margin, the most significant advancement in Augur’s history. We look forward to folks opening issues and sharing feedback as we work toward a hosted version of Augur in our next release later this year. https://github.com/chaoss/augur/releases/tag/v0.43.0[If you want to jump right in, updated docker build/compose and bare metal installation instructions are available here](https://github.com/chaoss/augur/docs/new-install.md)Augur is now releasing a dramatically improved new version to the main branch. It is also available here: https://github.com/chaoss/augur/releases/tag/v0.43.0
– The main branch is a stable version of our new architecture, which features:
– Dramatic improvement in the speed of large-scale data collection (10,000+ repos). All data is obtained for 10k+ repos within a week
– A new job management architecture that uses Celery and Redis to manage queues, and enables users to run a Flower job monitoring dashboard
– Materialized views to increase the snappiness of APIs and Frontends on large-scale data
– Changes to primary keys, which now employ a UUID strategy that ensures unique keys across all Augur instances
– Support for https://github.com/chaoss/sandiego-rh dashboards (view a sample here: https://eightknot.osci.io/). (beautification coming soon!)
– Data collection completeness assurance enabled by a structured, relational data set that is easily compared with platform API Endpoints
– The next release of the new version will include a hosted version of Augur where anyone can create an account and add repos “they care about”. Augur’s new frontend (https://github.com/augurlabs/augur_view) will move to the CHAOSS org and be released with integration to the *EightKnot* project, providing advanced, dynamic visualizations of metrics, metrics models, and login functions. Users will have tight control of the repositories they see in views they create. The hosted instance will add repositories to a user’s view if it already has data for that requested organization or repository. If it’s a new repository or organization, the user will be notified that collection will take (time required for the scale of repositories added).

We are so proud of and thankful for all who contributed to this latest release!  Amazing work!

This meeting will now happen at 6:00 am US Central/Chicago time, every other Wednesday. Feel free to join anytime if you are in the area!

New Streamlined Issue Template for Releasing New Metrics

If you are working in one of our Working Groups and the team has developed a new metric for release, you will notice a new and improved issue template for the process of releasing that metric for public review. The idea was that it would be a little less daunting, without sacrificing any quality. You can find the new template in each working group, and an example here.

CHAOSScast #69 Released – Community Insights with Hedan Zeng (Part 2 of 2)

Last week we posted the first of two episodes of our amazing guest, Hedan Zeng, the Director of Product Management at Common Room. We are happy to present the sequel! Hedan shares her insights with Georg Link, Venia Logan, and Sophia Vargas as they talk about engagement metrics, community sentiment and unstructured community interactions, membership statistics, and measuring the risk for burnout. You can listen to this interesting Part 2 by going to https://podcast.chaoss.community/69.

Reminder: Help Make Our DEI Metrics Better!

We are hosting a survey for those who have been in traditionally underrepresented and marginalized in tech around our current DEI metrics and where we might be lacking. CHAOSS recognizes its own limitations with regard to who is developing these metrics and where our ideas for new metrics come from, so we want to broaden those perspectives through in-depth interviews and a brief survey. It would be amazing if you could help us spread the word about this initial survey, which lives here https://anitaihuman.limesurvey.net/796876?lang=en. We also want to give a shout-out to Anita Ihuman who is leading this initiative! Anita has been an integral part of several teams at CHAOSS, including our DEI working group, DEI Event Badging, and CHAOSS Africa. Thanks for heading this up, Anita!

Resurfacing the Discourse Migration

We’ve talked about launching a Discourse instance for a while, but we are going to be moving this forward in earnest. If you’re interested in working on this project, or if you have experience installing or maintaining Discourse, please reach to Elizabeth Barron (elizabeth@chaoss.community).

Help Us Bring More Listeners to CHAOSScast

If you have a favorite CHAOSScast episode, we’d love your help! We are asking community members to listen to a CHAOSScast episode that interests you and  pull some key takeaways (6-7) from the discussion. If you can email venia@sociallyconstructed.online with the following information, she will make an abridged takeaway episode to help pique the interest of new listeners. This is an example of what she’s looking for:

      • Episode ## Title of podcast
      • 0:00-0:59    Introduction
      • 1:00-1:32    Interesting segment
      • 4:27-5:13    Interesting segment

This is a great way for newcomers to CHAOSS to contribute – we appreciate your help!

Daylight Savings Time Change Alert!

We are finishing up the dreaded “week in-between” when Europe recognizes Daylight Savings Time a week before the US. And if we weren’t all feeling disoriented enough, when (most of) the US moves clocks back an hour this weekend, it will affect all those who live in a place that keeps their clocks at the same time. In short, who even knows what time or day it is?  If you are not subscribed to the CHAOSS calendar or a member of the #general channel in the CHAOSS Slack, we hope you can catch up with us. All CHAOSS meetings are listed in US Central (Chicago) Time Zones, so please double-check the times of meetings in your area. Here is a handy tool to help you figure that out. We hope to see you soon!

The complete changelog can be seen on GitHub. Great work, GrimoireLab team!

New CHAOSScast Episode #68: Community Insights with Hedan Zeng (Part 1 of 2)

Hedan joins host Georg Link and panelists Venia Logan and Sophia Vargas to talk about community metrics like membership, community responsiveness, and sentiment. They also talk about the philosophy of metrics, improving the quality of metrics, privacy and data sharing and listening versus automating. Listen to part 1 here: https://podcast.chaoss.community/68.

New Working Group! Communications Working Group Now Forming

In an effort to improve the way CHAOSS shares information about what we’re working on, and what others are doing in terms of implementing our metrics and metrics models, we decided that it’s time for a Comms Working Group. This group will help tell the stories around CHAOSS and other open source community health metrics, from development to implementation. This group is currently forming, so if you are interested in participating, we’d love to invite you to the weekly meetings on Wednesdays at 9:00 am US Central on this Zoom link. There is also a Slack channel if you’d prefer to engage asynchronously. Come help us form this group!

OSPO Meeting Time Change

Last week we told you about the pivot in the Value Working Group to be more focused on the needs of OSPOs. This new direction has also meant a new time for this meeting. It will still happen bi-weekly on Thursdays but will now be at 11:00 am US Central/Chicago Time. As always, you can keep up with all the CHAOSS meeting changes by subscribing to our CHAOSS calendar here: https://chaoss.community/participate.

We are Expanding the Badger Team Again!

Our DEI Event Badging Program is gaining more traction in the open source event space, and as such, our number of applications is growing. To keep up with this increase in demand, we will be training another group of Badgers. Badgers are the ones who review badge applications (2 Badgers are assigned for each application) and make recommendations on any improvements an organizer might make. If this sounds interesting to you, we invite you to join us at the New Badger Orientation Meeting on October 26 at 11:00 am US Central/Chicago time. This team is open to newcomers and seasoned CHAOSS community members alike. Reach out to Elizabeth Barron for an invitation to the meeting if you’d like to attend or learn more about being a Badger.

New CHAOSScast Episode #67: CHAOSS Newcomer Slack Bot and She Code Africa with Precious and Iyimide

CHAOSS was so fortunate to have been chosen to participate in She Code Africa Contributhon Mentorship program earlier in the year! In this Episode, host Georg Link speaks with mentees Precious Abubakar and Iyimide Adegunloye, along with panelists and She Code Africa mentors Ruth Ikegah, Matt Cantu Snell, and Elizabeth Barron. They talk about the mentorship program itself, the project (our CHAOSS Newcomer Slack Bot) and what was learned along the way. This is a great episode, especially if you are interested in contributing to the Slack bot, or are a prospective mentee in CHAOSS and want to know firsthand what it’s like to participate in a program like this! You can listen here: https://podcast.chaoss.community/67.

Bitergia’s Metric of the Month: The Elephant Factor

On a fabulous new series of blog posts by the Bitergia folks, you can take a deep dive into an individual metric. This month, they cover the Elephant Factor, and share experiences with those who are using this metric to measure this facet of community health. (And no, this metric does not measure how many contributions were made by elephants, although that would be awesome.) You can read all about this Metric of the Month on Bitergia’s blog.

Reminder: Please Share Feedback Through the CHAOSS Community Survey by October 12

Last week we announced that the CHAOSS Community Survey was open! We highly encourage everyone in the CHAOSS community to take this survey and share their thoughts and experiences with participating in the CHAOSS community.

From our blog post announcement:

A core value of CHAOSS is centering diversity, equity, and inclusion in everything we do. In order to make our community more welcoming and inclusive and continue to center DEI, we have been working with our DEI Audit team to develop a community survey. With this survey, we hope to increase our understanding of community members’ experiences within CHAOSS, and surface areas for improving our policies and practices.

Please feel free to read the full blog post for more details on the survey, and help us make our community more welcoming and inclusive for all!

You can find the survey here: https://chaossproject.limesurvey.net/835156?lang=en and it will be open until October 12.

Join Us for Hacktoberfest!

CHAOSS is participating once again in Hacktoberfest, a joint effort produced by Digital Ocean, appwrite, and Docker, which aims to help contributors find a project and make a contribution. We have tagged some issues with the label “Hacktoberfest” on some of our GitHub repos, so if you’re looking for something to work on, you can start there. For a full list of rules to participate in the Hacktoberfest program, please see the Hacktoberfest site. Good luck to all who are participating!

CHAOSScast Episode #66: Deciding What Metrics to Measure for Community Managers with Lori Goldman, Bri Leever and Victoria Cumberbatch

This episode features a discussion with three community architects and community management experts: Lori Goldman, Bri Leever, and Victoria Cumberbatch. They talk about how they all got started in community management, focusing on patterns over numbers, how numbers translate into behaviors, and how the data can be used to tell a story about your community. There are some fascinating insights in this one, and some great references to resources for future reading and learning. Highly recommend you check this out (especially if you’re a community manager!), and you can do so here: https://podcast.chaoss.community/66.

From the site:

Join the first in-person Workshop to help organizations effectively implement Open Source Program Offices (OSPOs) based on specific region needs in Europe. October’s Ospology.live is hosted by OSPO at Ericsson and co-organized with TODO, OpenChain, SPDX, CHAOSS and OpenSSF projects.

Dawn Foster, Sean Goggins, and Daniel Izquierdo will be giving a talk on CHAOSS and how OSPOs can use Metrics Models to learn about their communities.

To register or learn more about the event, visit the OSPOlogy.live site.

Reminder: Please Share Your Experience Through the CHAOSS Community Survey by October 12

We recently announced that the CHAOSS Community Survey was open!

No Asia-Pacific Community Call This Week

The Asia-Pacific Community call is canceled this week because of the Chinese holiday. We will see you again on October 19!

Reminder: New Onboarding Meeting for Newcomers to CHAOSS Starting October 5

The CHAOSS community continues to grow! To make the onboarding process a little easier, Elizabeth Barron (CHAOSS Community Manager) and Ruth Ikegah (CHAOSS Africa Community Lead) will be hosting onboarding meetings the first Wednesday of every month at 11:00 am US Central/Chicago time, starting October 5.

No Official Metrics Release in October

Typically, CHAOSS officially releases metrics twice a year (April and October). Because our latest cycle was focused on reviewing and updating previously released metrics (especially our older ones!) there is no official release of new metrics this October. Any new metrics will be released as part of our continuous release cycle and will be part of the April 2023 release.  We hope that clears up any confusion around the 2022-10 release.

CHAOSS Joins the TODO Associates Program, and Value Working Group is Pivoting to be OSPO Focused

As the community around open source health metrics evolves, so does CHAOSS! We’ve enjoyed increased engagement from the OSPO community, in both industry and academia and have seen this engagement through the Value Working Group as a point of entry. But the Value Working Group covers a broad range of lenses for defining “value” and as such, it was decided that this group could narrow its focus to better serve the needs of those working in OSPOs. As mentioned before, the Societal Value focus area has shifted to the DEI Working Group where it is being worked on.

This aligns with our new participation in the TODO Group’s Associate Program which aims to help OSPOs connect on best practices, community engagement, and a variety of OSPO related topics.

Because of this Working Group shift, you can expect to see a name change, a README change,  and potentially a time and date change for the meetings, which we will announce as soon as the group has had a chance to finalize this new direction. Stay tuned! (By the way, if you would like to participate in this new Working Group, you can join the #wg-value Slack channel for now).

CHAOSScast Episode #65: How Projects Secure their Code with Chris and Nir of Arnica

This episode features a super interesting chat with Chris Abraham, Head of Data Science, and Nir Valtman, Co-Founder and CEO of Arnica. Chris and Nir share their expertise in analyzing open source community repositories with our host Georg Link, and some surprising results of a recent security analysis they completed. They also talk about the security controls code owners can take advantage of, maintainer burnout, and their open source project, GitGoat. So many interesting topics in this episode! You won’t want to miss this one. You can listen here: https://podcast.chaoss.community/65.

New In-Person Event for OSPOs

We wanted to pass along an event that may be of interest to many in the CHAOSS community: OSPOlogy.live in Stockholm, Sweden, October 19-20, 2022.

Migrating from the Mailing List to Discourse

We have discussed the migration from a mailing list to a more newcomer-friendly forum for a while, and we are now ready to move this project forward. If you would like to take part in these discussions or in the migration process, please join us in the #forum-migration-planning channel on Slack.

Volunteer Opportunity: CHAOSScon Video Editing

We are looking for someone to help us make the in-person talks at CHAOSScon available for everyone! If you have experience with video editing software and would be able to separate the individual talks and add some CHAOSS brand elements, we would appreciate the help. Once we have talks broken into individual videos, we can upload them to YouTube. We estimate the video editing will take 1-2 hours, and will make a huge impact in helping others learn from the talks that were given at CHAOSScon. Please reach out to Georg Link or Elizabeth Barron on Slack if you are able to take this on.

CHAOSScon Slides and Pre-Recorded Talks Available

As mentioned above, we are working on posting recordings of the in-person talks from CHAOSScon. But in the meantime, we welcome you to watch the three pre-recorded talks, which are now on CHAOSStube:

The slides from the in-person talks are also available on our CHAOSScon page, under Schedule.

Congratulations to our GSOC Graduates!

Last week also brought the end to our 2022 Google Summer of Code cohort. We wanted to recognize and extend a heartfelt congratulations to the following mentees who successfully completed their projects!

We also want to recognize the many CHAOSS mentors who spent a lot of time working with our GSOC mentees:

  • Kevin Lumbard
  • Ritik Malik
  • Yehui Wang
  • Venu Vardhan Reddy Tekula
  • Sean Goggins
  • Andrew Brain
  • Vinod Ahuja
  • Elizabeth Barron
  • Matt Cantu Snell

Together, you all made a huge impact on CHAOSS and our community!
