Announcing CHAOSS Africa!

We have had consistent participation from the African community for a while, and we are very excited to now formalize our presence there! Ruth Ikegah will officially be leading the efforts to build the CHAOSS Africa community and working towards empowering people to contribute in multiple ways. If you are interested in participating or learning more, there is a new CHAOSS Africa Weekly Community Call beginning today (June 13, 2:00 pm WAT) and happening every Monday. More information to come, but you can also follow along with Ruth’s journey into community building by following CHAOSS Africa on Twitter (@chaoss_africa).

Congratulations Ruth! 🎉

Mid-Year Break from CHAOSS Meetings

CHAOSS will be taking a little break from regularly scheduled meetings June 20-July 1 2022, and all regular working group and community meetings will be canceled during this time. Regular working group and community meetings will resume July 5, 2022. (Any meetings between mentors and mentees for GSoC, GSoD, or Outreachy can still happen when needed. This cancellation only applies to our regular CHAOSS-wide meetings.) Enjoy your break!

Outreachy/GSoC/GSoD Updates

We love to showcase our amazing students and mentees and share their progress with our community! GSoC coding starts today, but here is the latest update from our Outreachy student:

Keep up the great work, Precious!

Reminder: Join Our Maintainer Burnout Session on June 17

As part of GitHub’s Maintainer Month (June), CHAOSS is hosting a one-hour interactive workshop on Maintainer Burnout. This will be on June 17, 2022 at 12pm US Central/Chicago time.

Burnout is a relatable issue, almost everyone has been there– and it’s something we see quite often in open source. CHAOSS is hosting an interactive working group session to understand how maintainers manage burnout and talk about how to facilitate conversations about burnout and mental health in their open source communities. We will also discuss the Project Burnout metric from our DEI working group.

You can register for this free event, or if you would like to help with the event, please reach out to Ruth Ikegah on slack.

Reminder: You’re Invited! DEI Event Badging Reviewer Appreciation Event June 16

Please join us on June 16, 2022 at 8:00 am US Central/Chicago time (convert to your time) as we celebrate our amazing team of reviewers and the success of the DEI Badging Initiative! This will be a fun, informal virtual event, and of course, there is no cost to participate. You can register for the event here.
