Reminder: Check CHAOSS Meeting Times for Your Time Zone

This is just a reminder that last weekend, (most of) the US moved their clocks forward one hour for Daylight Savings Time. Because CHAOSS meetings are based in the US Central/Chicago time zone, our meeting times may have changed for you, depending on where you are.

It’s probably a good idea to double-check the CHAOSS meetings, which you can do on the calendar here: https://chaoss.community/participate.

(The #general channel in Slack should also show you meeting reminders adjusted for your time zone.)

Reminder: Metrics Review Period is Open

Now is the time for you to offer last-minute feedback on our metrics candidates prior to their release in April. You don’t have to have worked on metrics, or participated in the CHAOSS Community before; we value feedback from everyone. This release will include 8 new metrics and 1 metric that will be moving to a metrics model.

Thanks for helping make our metrics the best they can be!

Working Group Spotlight: Evolution

This week in the Weekly Community meeting we heard an update on our Evolution Working Group.

This group would love for you to attend! They recently added 3 new candidates to our growing list of developed metrics:

  • Change Request Commits (How many code change commits are included in a change request?)
  • Change Request Reviews (To what extent are change requests put through a formal review process using platform features?)
  • Conversion Rate (What are the rates at which new contributors become more sustained contributors?)

Next up for this group is to see what types of metrics are needed for the metrics models that are currently being discussed. These metrics will be crucial in helping our users implement our models in the real world.

Sean Goggins is the lead for this Working Group, so feel free to reach out or join the Evolution Working Group slack channel. The details for this meeting are:

  • They meet every other Tuesday at 10:00 am US Central/Chicago time
  • Next meeting is tomorrow, March 22
  • Agenda and minutes from previous meetings are here
  • Previous meetings can be seen on the Evolution Playlist on CHAOSStube

Hope you can join us – it’s a great working group to be a part of!

Changes to DEI Badging Meetings

We decided in the DEI Badging meeting to make a few changes to the meetings, with regard to cadence and meeting location:

  • Meetings will now be at the CHAOSS zoom link (https://zoom.us/my/chaoss)
  • Meetings will switch to a bi-weekly cadence but will be an hour long

These meetings are now every other Wednesday at 8:30 am US Central/Chicago time. The next meeting is March 30, 2022; there is no meeting this week.

Reminder: Office Hours are Back

This is a reminder that our open Office Hours for newcomers (or anyone, really) happen every Tuesday from 9:00 am – 10:00 am US Central/Chicago time. Feel free to join as you wish at any time during that hour at https://zoom.us/my/chaoss. No registration is needed and you can ask anything you want about the CHAOSS project!

Reminder: Check CHAOSS Meeting Times in Your Time Zone

This is just a reminder that over the weekend, (most of) the US moved their clocks forward one hour for DST. Because CHAOSS meetings are based in the US Central/Chicago time zone, our meeting times may have changed for you, depending on where you are.

It’s Official! CHAOSS is in GSOC ’22

We are so excited to be officially participating in Google Summer of Code again! If you are a student and would like to see what kind of projects we have in mind, you can see the list of ideas. To learn more about the GSOC process, or register your interest in participating with CHAOSS, we have a doc for that, too! Your deadline for registering your interest and completing some microtasks is April 19, 2022. Good luck!

Reminder: Last day for CfP for OSSummit NA

The LF’s Open Source Summit North America is happening June 21-24 in Austin, Texas and today is the last day to submit a talk. This conference aims to bring together a group of mini-conferences for the price of one. There are a multitude of topics you can speak on, and you can submit a talk here. This conference is also very welcoming to first time speakers, so if you haven’t had this opportunity before, now’s your chance to submit something.

Working Group Spotlight: Common

This week in the Community Call, we heard updates from the Common Working Group. This group looks at metrics that have a common interest to more than one other working group, and they handle operational issues and processes internal to CHAOSS itself.

Currently, this group is finalizing a Data Privacy/Ethics Document for those who are consuming our metrics. We will point to this document in every metric we have, to encourage those who are gathering and using the data to do so responsibly and lawfully.  This group is looking for more links on published guidelines on ethics, so if you have anything to add to this doc, they’d love your input.

The Common Working Group has also been working on a few new metrics for the upcoming 2022-04 metrics release (Occasional Contributors), and CHAOSS-wide operational issues such as project boards, standard labels, using the .github repo, and creating a metrics style guide.

Dawn Foster leads this group and they meet every other Thursday at 10:00 am US Central/Chicago time. The next meeting is this week, on March 17 🍀. And of course, as is the case with all our meetings, it’s open to anyone who would like to attend!

Reminder: Metrics Review Period is Open

You don’t have to have worked on metrics, or participated in the CHAOSS Community before; we value feedback from everyone. Interested in Mentoring? Let us Know!

CHAOSS is a hopeful participant in a variety of student mentorship initiatives this year, including:

  • Google Summer of Code
  • Google Season of Docs
  • Outreachy
  • She Code Africa

We have an array of interesting proposed projects, and although we’re waiting on our official acceptance into these programs, we are hopeful that they will come to fruition. If you have been in the CHAOSS project for a while, and you’d like to become a mentor (or co-mentor!), please let Elizabeth know and she can point you in the right direction.

Working Group Spotlight: Risk

This week in the Weekly Community meeting we heard an update on our Risk Working Group.

This group has been working on a metric called the Defect Resolution Time metric for the upcoming 2022-04 release. This metric aims to answer the question “How much time does a project take to resolve defects once they have been reported and recorded?” and you can add your feedback to this issue if you have any comments on this metric.

Next up for this group is working on cleaning up some repo labels and deciding what metric to work on next from the list of ideas in our Metrics Spreadsheet. Risk’s focus areas are Security, Business Risk, Code Quality, Licensing, Transparency, and Dependency Risk Assessment. If any of these areas sound interesting to you, here are the details on connecting with the Risk Working Group:

The maintainer of this Working Group is Sean Goggins, so you should introduce yourself and say hello if you have any specific questions about the Risk Working Group.

Metrics Freeze is Almost Here

In preparation for our April Metrics Release, we are currently scheduled to freeze the metric release candidates on March 1. This allows for a 30-day public comment period, where anyone can jump into the conversation and comment on new metrics we’ve developed. If you’re taking part in a working group, the agendas should carve out some time to finish up any metrics that are in progress. We’ll also talk a little about this process in the Community Meeting tomorrow at 11:00 am US Central/Chicago time. You can also ask questions about this in our Slack channel. Join us!

Some Open CfPs for You!

Every now and again we pass along some information around open Calls for Proposals/Presentations/Papers for tech conferences of interest. Of course, we’d love to have you submit something related to CHAOSS but it’s completely fine if you don’t! 😆 We encourage you to submit something anyway. If you’re a new speaker and you’d like some feedback on your talk proposal, we have many seasoned speakers who would love to help. Simply post something in the #general channel of our Slack.

If you see any other CfPs of interest, let us know and we’ll mention them here in the newsletter. Good luck on your proposals!

Recent Changes to Metrics Template and Checklist

In case you missed it or haven’t been able to attend our working group meetings recently, we thought we’d give you an update on the state of our metrics development process. With the release of MARS (Metrics Automated Release System) in October 2021 came some changes to the way we roll out new metrics. While there were process changes, there were also a few tools that were added to keep our metrics consistent across working groups and ensure all metrics fit a high quality standard: the addition of a metrics template and a metrics quality checklist for releases.

In the last few months, we have made some improvements to both of these things:

We are also now regularly revisiting previously released metrics to make sure these new enhancements are included and to improve the quality of the metric when needed, and we are developing a checklist and process for that.

Please help us decide by voting in this sliding poll here: https://voteupapp.com/shared/lCHNiOfnO

Welcome Newcomers!

We’ve seen a lot of new faces and names recently, so we just want to welcome you to the CHAOSS Community. We have a handy form that lets us get to know you a little more, so we can help point you in the right direction when getting started in CHAOSS. If you’re new to the community and you haven’t yet filled this form out, we’d love it if you could do that here.

We also highly recommend you attend one of our CHAOSS Community Weekly Meetings, happening every Tuesday at 11:00 am US Central/Chicago time. If you can’t make that, you can see previous recordings of our meetings on CHAOSStube. You can also join our open Office Hours starting in February, happening every Tuesday at 9:00 am US Central/Chicago time.

Reach out to us on Slack or via email if you have any questions!
