Reminder: Holiday Schedule for CHAOSS Meetings and Pausing Slack Notifications

This year we are following our tradition of taking a little break from official CHAOSS meetings at the end of the year. Please note the following meeting cancellations, with particular attention to the Getting Started with Augur meeting:

  • December 12- January 9 – no CHAOSS working group or community meetings
  • Exception: Getting Started with Augur will still happen on December 12 (connection details below)

During the break, CHAOSS work can still occur asynchronously if an individual Working Group wishes, and many of us will be around in Slack periodically if anything urgent arises.

We have also received feedback that it’s helpful to continue to receive meeting confirmations in Slack even if there are no meetings :). If you’d like to mute any notifications during our break, you can do so by going to your Profile PIcture at the top of the Slack App, and clicking on Pause Notifications for however long you like.

Although there may be Slack activity, the hope in canceling meetings is that we all take this time to rest and protect ourselves from burnout so that we can come back refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to start anew in 2023!

Next Onboarding Session for New Chaotics

The CHAOSS community continues to grow! To make the onboarding process a little easier, Elizabeth Barron (CHAOSS Community Manager) and Ruth Ikegah (CHAOSS Africa Community Lead) will be hosting the next Onboarding Session on January 11, 2023 at 11:00 am US Central/Chicago time. We know this time is not convenient for everyone, but this is just a start and we will add and iterate as we go.

This meeting will cover:

  • General overview of CHAOSS
  • How you can begin contributing
  • How to get started with using the metrics
  • Q&A

Bitergia’s Metric of the Month: The Pony Factor

This month, our friends at Bitergia have published a deep dive into a metric called the Pony Factor. Inspired from the Elephant Factor metric, this metric aims to measure sustainability of the project if one or more of the core contributors leaves the project. It centers around calculating the smallest number of contributors who were responsible for 50% of the codebase in the past two years. It’s a fascinating metric, and well worth the read!
