CHAOSScast Episode 33: Managing Portfolios of OSS Projects with Emil Wåreus

In the latest CHAOSScast episode, our panelists Georg Link, Sophia Vargas, and Armstrong Foundjem speak with Emil Wåreus from the Swedish startup debricked. They enjoyed an in-depth discussion about using analytics and computational models to understand the quality of dependencies within your open source projects, and how to mitigate bias and adverse social impacts in these complex computational models. This was a super interesting conversation that you can listen to here: https://podcast.chaoss.community/33.

Current Open Call for Proposals

There are a few conferences that have open Calls for Proposals right now, and we encourage our community members to get out there and talk about CHAOSS! If you are interested in presenting at any of these and need some help with your proposal, let me know and I can connect you with some “veteran” speakers who are happy to give you feedback on your abstract. Also, feel free to join our Working Groups, which are discussing potential topics and panel discussions.

Migrating to Groups.io

In the next few weeks, we are migrating to Groups.io to manage our mailing lists. If you are already a subscriber to our mailing list, NO ACTION IS NEEDED on your part, unless you’d like to unsubscribe from the mailing list. To unsubscribe, you can do so by using the unsubscribe form at the bottom of the mailing list page. You are welcome to unsubscribe from the list at any time, of course, even after the migration happens. You can also email us at mail@chaoss.community to request we remove you from the list. Otherwise you probably won’t see any change in your inbox after the migration happens.

Standardization Project Still Underway

We wanted to thank those who have been working to standardize the CHAOSS repositories and naming across working groups, as this is a very daunting task! But at the end of it all, ensuring consistency across the project means we are better set up for future automation and newcomer contributions. Thank you to Ritik Malik, Yash Prakash, Georg Link, and Faisal Riyaz. Your hard work is greatly appreciated!

Reminder: App Ecosystem Working Group Meets Today

Because of the awkward timing of when the newsletter usually goes out, the App Ecosystem Working Group never makes it onto our list of Upcoming Meetings. 😭 This is a super interesting group that works on developing metrics pertinent to the larger open source ecosystem. Regular participants of this group come from a variety of communities and the conversation is always lively. For recent examples of their work, check out this blog post on opensource.com (How We Develop Success Metrics for Open Source Events) and the recent CHAOSScast episode (Marketing Metrics for OSS Foundations).

This group meets every other Monday at noon US Central (Chicago) time on our Community Zoom (https://zoom.us/my/chaoss), with the next meeting happening TODAY! Please feel free to join!

(And apologies to the regulars in this group – we ❤️ you!)

OSS-NA Cancelled for 2021, OSS-EU Still On!

The Linux Foundation announced the cancellation of OSS-NA in August 2021, and instead are focusing their efforts on OSS-EU in Dublin September 28-October 1. The OSS-EU will have a global focus, and while CHAOSS’s participation is still TBD,  they have opened the call for proposals here: https://events.linuxfoundation.org/open-source-summit-europe/program/cfp/.

CHAOSScast Episode 28:  Human-centric Operations and Metrics with Sophia Vargas

The amazing Sophia Vargas from Google was our guest for the latest episode of CHAOSScast. Our panelists Dawn Foster and Daniel Izquierdo join our host Georg Link to talk with Sophia about her role in the Open Source Program Office in Google and her involvement with the CHAOSS project. You won’t want to miss this one! Listen here: https://podcast.chaoss.community/28.

Design Input for Presenting Metrics Needed

As our list of developed metrics grows, we are finding it increasingly challenging to present them in a cohesive and searchable way. We’d love input from those in the community who have ideas around ways we can present our metrics for a variety of users. If you are interested in joining this conversation, we will be discussing this at our next Web Content meeting on March 1, 2021 at 11:00 am Central (Chicago) (UTC -6) time. Find the time in your timezone here: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html?iso=20210301T170000&p1=64. Please join us!

This Week’s Volunteer Opportunity

We are still looking to build out this team and are grateful for those who have stepped up to volunteer!

D&I Badging Initiative Reviewer (More than one volunteer needed!)

  • Description of what’s needed: CHAOSS D&I Badging aims to foster healthier practices of Diversity & Inclusion in technology-centered events. We are looking for reviewers who care about this kind of work and want to make a difference in the tech event space. As a reviewer, your job is not to assess the Diversity & Inclusion statistics of an event. Your task is to help event organizers develop better practices for measuring Diversity & Inclusion in their own event spaces. (Training and a clear set of guidelines and criteria for awarding badges will be provided to volunteers.)All applications (so far) have been for virtual events, but the program will support in-person events as they begin to happen again. All the information you need for the review should be publicly available, such as on the website. You are encouraged to ask questions about the applicant event. Feel free to have a conversation with the applicant. We take the program’s impact seriously, but we hope the application can be a casual and enjoyable environment.
  • Skills needed: The most important requirement for a reviewer is that you are committed to improving Diversity and Inclusion in the ways that you can. Otherwise, we require the applicant to understand basic GitHub functions, mostly regarding GitHub Issues.
It is strongly recommended that you are involved in some sort of open source contribution as well. (Training on the D&I Badging process will be given to volunteers).
  • Hours per week needed: Time commitment varies depending on your number of assigned reviews. Expect no more than an hour per week as a reviewer.

If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, reach out to Elizabeth (elizabeth@chaoss.community).
