End-of-Year Schedule for CHAOSS Meetings
As we usually do, CHAOSS will take a few meeting breaks as the year comes to a close. The holiday/end-of-year schedule for CHAOSS meetings is:
- Week of November 25: No US-based CHAOSS meetings
- December 9 – January 6: No CHAOSS meetings
There is one exception, and that is for the UN-SDG Working Group. Because this group is new, they have decided to keep the December 11 meeting on the calendar. The CHAOSS Calendar is updated, so if you are subscribed to any or all of the meetings, these cancelations should be reflected. You can always check the online CHAOSS calendar if you are uncertain of a meeting time/date.
CHAOSScon EU 2025 CfP Open Until December 17
We are thrilled to be hosting CHAOSScon EU in Brussels again on January 30, 2025! Here is some pertinent information:
- The CfP for talk proposals is open until December 17, so we encourage you to submit your ideas!
- Registration is also open! Tickets are $10 and include a post-event social gathering. As always, you can attend CHAOSScon to join the conversation about open source metrics and open source community health, and connect with some of our CHAOTICs!
- And if you’re working for a company that is open to sponsorship, we could really use the help! Sponsorship allows us to provide snacks and drinks throughout the course of the day.

New Badger Orientation November 19
If you are interested in becoming a badge reviewer (Badger) for our DEI Event Badging Program, or if you’d just like to learn more about what’s involved, there is an orientation session scheduled for Tuesday, November 19 at 7:00 am US Central/Chicago time. You do not need to know about CHAOSS or the metrics to become a Badger. This is a great way to get involved and start contributing to CHAOSS as a newcomer. You can find the connection details on the calendar invite. This will be the last session of the year. Please join us!
New Metrics Template Implemented
We have switched all metrics into a new template, designed to improve the visual experience when accessing these documents on our website. Instead of being shown all the information at once (which can be a little overwhelming!), the new template hides most of the information behind a markdown dropdown block. Now when you access a metric on the website, you will be able to see the most important information upfront. Thank you to Yigakpoa Ikpae (Yiga) and Peculiar Umeh for their hard work on this project!
If anyone in the community has some free time and would like to do random spot-checking for anything that looks off, that would be incredibly helpful to the website and metrics teams. You can report any issues you find in the wg-metrics repository.
New Location for All CHAOSS Meeting Minutes
If you have the CHAOSS meeting minutes bookmarked, you will need to update your browsers! We have chosen to move all CHAOSS minutes into one centralized document, which can be found here. Meetings are separated by tabs in the Google Doc, which is a newer feature provided by Google. Let us know if you have any issue connecting to or accessing this document.
CHAOTIC of the Week (November 4-8, 2024): Leon Nunes!
A little about Leon:
Hey there folks, I’m a tinkerer, I dabble with different things in tech from Devops to Hardware and I love participating and helping communities.
What Leon works on at CHAOSS:
Currently I’m still new but we’re trying to find communities and conferences where we can meet people, while also working with Divya and Yaya, we’re trying to get the word out in different communities about CHAOSS.
Leon’s advice to open source newbies:
Opensource has always been something I keep going back to, I’d say the most important thing is to contribute to projects you’re familiar with so you don’t over-exert yourself.

CHAOTIC of the Week (November 11-15, 2024): Harmony Elendu!
A little about Harmony:
I’m Harmony Elendu based in Nigeria, West Africa. I like putting in my best is something I cherish doing every time regardless of where I find myself. Although I’m naturally shy at times but generally a people’s person—jovial, filled with smiles, and always eager to help out while getting to know others better. Transitioning from Graphic and Design Experience to Product and Project Manager merged with a Program experience, it has been 8 years in the technology industry building diverse products and working with great people while leaving my mark in blockchain, edtech, Fintech, Open Source, Ticketing, Volunteer communities and more. Sharing knowledge and attention to details has been the ingredient in my journey but I value seeing that everything works, and the next person gets better as well. Currently, I am seeking the right opportunity specifically in Project and Program Management while contributing my own quota in making the world a better place through Tech and Support to others. Aside from writing, speaking and playing board games, I enjoy cooking and taking shots with friends mixed with loud laughter and knowledge sharing.
What Harmony works on at CHAOSS:
I lead the Technical Writers’ Focus Group, ensuring that documentation needs are met, improved or enhanced. I also co-produce and host CHAOSScast. Additionally, I contribute to CHAOSS Education, the Project Management Focus Group, DEI Badging Project and a bit more. I’m excited to have championed the Doc Scavenger Program and “20Min with CHAOSS Africa,” where we highlight the experiences of contributors from Africa and the incredible work they do within CHAOSS and beyond. Please reach out if you’d like to be featured—your experiences and feedback will make the community better and may just be what another contributor needs to get going.
Harmony’s Advice to Newcomers:
I understand that navigating the community and figuring out what to do can sometimes feel overwhelming and draining. Start from attending meetings casually to hear what’s going on and see what others are working on. Ask questions and offer suggestions where you can. Remember, it’s open source — we’re all here to learn, improve things, and contribute.Know that the way things work here might be different from what you initially envisioned. But once you’ve figured things out a bit, you’ll find your ground, discover what works for you, and identify where you can contribute. It’s always okay to ask questions and seek help while making connections. Open source allows you to create your own path, which may take time but will be incredibly valuable at the long run. Just ensure you’re comfortable and having fun in the process.
