Join us for DEI.md Panel Discussion for GitHub’s Maintaner Month

As many of you know, CHAOSS has been partnering with GitHub and the All In project on a DEI project badging initiative. As this project moves forward, we collectively wanted to begin educating open source maintainers on what this DEI.md file is all about and what it means for a project to include one in their repo. We also want to begin to introduce the idea of DEI project badging.

We hope you can join our panel discussion on Monday, May 22 at 12:00 pm US Central/Chicago time! You can learn more and register here: https://maintainermonth.github.com/schedule/allin.

CHAOSS Meeting Summaries Now on Discourse

In order to make it easier to surface conversations that happen during meetings, to improve discoverability and transparency, and also to include others who were not able to make our meetings, we are going to post weekly high-level recaps of our meetings. This week’s meetings included:

You can subscribe to the #meeting-recap tag in Discourse to be notified of new meeting summaries. Feel free to continue async conversations there or in Slack. We hope these summaries are useful! Let us know how we can improve them.

Our CHAOTIC of the Week is Sophia Vargas!

We’d like to take a minute and highlight our CHAOTIC of the Week, which is the wonderful Sophia Vargas!

A little about Sophia:

Hello from NYC!

My name is Sophia Vargas and I’ve been working with the CHAOSS community since 2020. I’ve been at Google for 5 years, in our OSPO for the last 3, and before that, I was an analyst at Forrester Research covering the data center market. Throughout my career, I’ve studied technology systems – from architecture and design to how we build and operate – with the common pursuit to learn, quantify and share.

Fast facts and metrics:

  • My relaxing activities include jigsaw puzzles with audio book soundtracks. During the pandemic ‘stuck at home era’,  I was averaging 1000 ‘placed pieces’ a week.
  • I have 2 cats and in the last year 21% of my presentation slides have featured pictures of them…
  • I try to visit a new country every year. This year was Argentina! (I HIGHLY recommend Patagonia for those interested in hiking and hanging out with glaciers)

What Sophia’s working on at CHAOSS:

  • For me, CHAOSS has been an incredible space to find other folks working through the same issues I come across in my day job in Google’s OSPO
  • In CHAOSS, I’ve spent most of my time in the RISK WG chatting about tangible and theoretical risk to open source ecosystems, and lately I’ve been joining the OSPO WG and have enjoyed learning from peers at other companies and commiserating on common pain points.

Sophia’s advice to newcomers to open source:

  • There are SO many things you can get involved in across open sourcey spaces, so take the time to find something that’s interesting and relevant to you!
  • You don’t need technical skills to be a productive and contributing member of a community.
  • Start by showing up, getting to know the project and community, and opportunities to volunteer will present themselves.

Special thanks from Elizabeth and the CHAOSS Community:

Sophia has brought so much experience, insight, and enthusiasm to the CHAOSS community, it’s hard to remember life at CHAOSS before she came! Her consistent participation in the Community Meetings, her valuable input on numerous Risk metrics, her work on CHAOSScons (both on the planning committee and as an honored speaker), her work on CHAOSScast as a panelist and guest, her work in the development of CHAOSS’s Data and Privacy statements, and her work as a member of the CHAOSS Board has made the project better in countless ways. Sophia’s impact has rippled through to every corner of the CHAOSS project and has solidified its foundation for years to come. She is a large part of what makes CHAOSS tick, and we are so grateful to have her in our community. Thank you for sharing your time, energy, vast experience, and positivity, Sophia! This project would absolutely not be the same without you ❤️.

If anyone would like to keep up with Sophia, you can find her at @Sophia_IV on Twitter or here on LinkedIn.
