Learning More About Contributing to CHAOSS

Several weeks ago, Matt Cantu published a blog post about common ways people connect with and join the CHAOSS community. The idea is to make this a more visible and permanent part of our website, but in the meantime, it’s a great guide to just getting started with us. You can read the blog post here and if you’re new to the community, it’s highly recommended reading. Thanks, Matt!

Reminder: Joining the CHAOSS Community

We are trying something new in the CHAOSS Community! If you’d like to get more involved with the community but aren’t sure where to start, we have a handy form for you to fill out. Minor Changes to Monthly Meeting

We decided at the last CHAOSS Community Weekly Meeting to change the format of our Monthly Meetings. Previously, these meetings were held on the first Tuesday of the month during our weekly community call, and they were meant to provide a brief summary of what’s happening in each of the working groups. We decided to roll these updates into the natural flow of the weekly community meetings instead of lumping them all into one giant meeting. Moving forward, you can expect to see working group updates peppered in amongst the regular weekly meeting agendas.

And just as a reminder, weekly meetings happen on Tuesdays at 11:00 am US Central/Chicago Time Zone. You can join them via our Zoom Channel and you can check your timezone here. These meetings are a great way to get to know the CHAOSS community and what we’re all about. If you’re new to the community we highly recommend attending, if you’re able to!

Reminder – Double-Check Meeting Times

As the US changed clocks for Daylight Savings Time over the weekend, we have caught up with most of the rest of the world. And because all CHAOSS meetings align with the US Central/Chicago time zone, it might be wise to double-check when the meetings are happening for your location.

You can join the CHAOSS Slack channel and the meeting reminders posted in the #general channel will automatically adjust themselves to your time zone, or you can use a date-time conversion tool like this one.

Hope to see you soon!

DEI Badging 3.0 Released!

Congratulations to the DEI Badging Team for releasing the latest version of our DEI Badging Initiative for events. The goals for this release were to add new metrics to the checklist, improve the reviewer guidelines, and update the README for clarity. The release met those goals and included the following changes:

  • DEI badging repo folded into event-diversity-and-inclusion
  • Combined Attendee and Speaker Demographics into one metric: Event Demographics
  • Added Inclusive Experience at Event, and Time Inclusion for Virtual Events to the checklist
  • Clarified documentation in multiple places
  • Added more reviewers

The DEI Badging Initiative passed its one year mark and continues to make a huge impact on the open source event ecosystem, as it has now badged 42 events!

Announcing All In: Open Sourcing Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

CHAOSS is very proud to be partnering with GitHub, The Linux Foundation, Red Hat, several Universities, and many others, as a founding partner in the All In project. All In is an open source community that is dedicated to advancing DEI in an “open source” way: collaboratively, transparently, and iteratively. By bringing together corporations, universities, and organizations like CHAOSS, we aim to create more inclusive and welcoming open source projects. This is an exciting partnership for CHAOSS, and you can read more about it through the website, or their GitHub repo.
