CHAOSSweekly (December 4-8, 2023)

By December 10, 2023No Comments

You’re Invited to our End-of-Year Hangout!

If you have a few minutes on Tuesday, December 12 at 11:00 am US Central (our usual Community meeting time), we’d love to hold space for those who just want to pop in and say hi. We’ve reserved a 30 minute block for that purpose. There’s no agenda and this won’t be recorded. It’s just a chance for us to come together with no other reason than to hangout with each other. Feel free to join us at https://zoom.us/my/chaoss.

Final Reminder- Holiday/End of Year Break

Every year, CHAOSS makes it a priority to take a break from meetings and metrics work. Burnout is a real thing, and we’d like to keep our community members from feeling burned out in any way. One of the ways we do this is through this yearly break.

As a result, all CHAOSS meetings are canceled from December 11-Jan 8, 2024.

We hope you all enjoy the break and that we all come back in January feeling refreshed and inspired!

Onboarding Courses and the CHAOSS Zoom Channel

During the break, we have opened up the CHAOSS Zoom channel for folks to record their videos for the CHAOSS Onboarding courses. If you are interested in participating in this project, check out the education GitHub repo for ideas of how you can contribute. You can show your interest in any of the issues and the Project Managers (Peculiar Umeh and Yiga Ikpae) will assign you.

Also, if you are planning on using the CHAOSS zoom for any reason during the break, you’ll just need to reserve a spot. You should also be aware that the CHAOSS Zoom channel is set to automatically record.

New on the CHAOSS Blog: Part Two of Three: Viability: Metrics for Viability

In this post, CHAOTIC Gary White explores the metrics and metrics models used by Verizon in their open source software viability analysis. He discusses the four metrics models around viability, which are Compliance + Security, Governance, Strategy, and Community. This is a very useful post if you are interested in what goes into each of these metrics models. Next time, Gary will talk about practical implementation of these models, and the tools you can use to gather this data. You can read his post here, and connect with him on Slack if you’d like to talk about these models further.

New on the CHAOSS Blog: OFA Symposium: Open Source Research Collaboration

Our very own Dawn Foster shares a wrap-up from this incredibly interesting conference that brought together those interested in open research and it’s impact on open policies. With links to each of the presentations, and a helpful summary of each, Dawn has brought the main points of the conference right to the CHAOSS community. It’s a fascinating read and you can find it on the CHAOSS blog here

New on the CHAOSS Blog: Artificial Intelligence: An Open Source Disruptor

In this recent post, CHAOTICs Matt Germonprez, Dawn Foster, and Sean Goggins discuss their thoughts on the ways AI may have an effect on the open source ecosystem. Whether it be through code contributions, engagement, or collaboration, it’s clear that more research needs to be done in this area. You can read this post here, and you should feel free to connect with Matt, Dawn, and Sean on Slack to talk more about this topic. It’s definitely something that will affect us all!

Help us celebrate our CHAOTIC of the Week: Georg Link!

A little about Georg:

Hi I’m Georg Link. I’m one of the founders of CHAOSS and the Director of Sales for Bitergia. I live in Omaha, Nebraska but am originally from Germany. Fun fact about me is that I grew up on the premises of an 800 year old castle. I have traveled 5 continents and have been fortunate to experience a lot. I like gaming, reading fiction, and hot air ballooning. I’m really happy to be a CHAOTIC!

What Georg works on at CHAOSS:

Most of my work in CHAOSS is in two places: I lead the App Ecosystem Working Group, and I host CHAOSScast, the CHAOSS podcast. I enjoy getting to meet new guests on the podcast and to have the chance to learn about new topics with regard to open source community health. I also serve on the Board of Directors and I attend the Community meeting when my schedule allows. A special highlight each year are the CHAOSScon events when I get to meet many other CHAOTICS in person.

Georg’s advice to newcomers to open source:

Don’t be afraid to ask questions and volunteer to do things that expand your comfort zone. Don’t know where to start? Show up to meetings, get a feel for how CHAOSS works, and soon enough opportunities to contribute will present themselves. The CHAOSS Community is filled with helpful and encouraging people. Nothing you contribute has to be 100% perfect, so long as you help us make progress. It’s ok to take risks and put yourself out there. That’s how you grow and learn something new.

Special thanks from Elizabeth and the CHAOSS Community:

Georg is such a foundational piece of this project, it would absolutely not be where it is today without his efforts, enthusiasm, and leadership. His kindness, empathy, and his ability to bring new voices and perspectives to the project is a huge part of CHAOSS’s success. It would be very difficult to enumerate the impact Georg has made on the lives of the CHAOTICs in the project. I know he’s made a huge impact on mine! Georg, I can’t imagine a CHAOSS without you, and it has absolutely been my privilege to get to know you. As one of the very first people I met here, you made me feel like I belonged from day one. We are extremely fortunate that you continue to participate and contribute to CHAOSS and we are so glad you’re here! Thanks for all you’ve done! ????

If you’d like to connect with Georg, you can find him on Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/georglink/
